Although this beautiful twin island of Trinidad & Tobago, located in the Caribbean, may not have many dedicated vegan restaurants or food outlets, most of them have options for vegans. You'll just need to specify your food preferences to them to ensure you select a meal that is in harmony with your vegan lifestyle. Below I'm going to list a couple of the vegan food options here in Trinidad & Tobago that I've experienced during my time back here.
The Youthful Vegan
This is the only strictly vegan restaurant that I know about here in Trinidad. Besides being a rare cuisine on the island, thier delicious food and warm customer service helps them to stand out even more. Every vegan visiting Trinidad & Tobago must visit The Youthful Vegan. Their menu varies daily giving you new and exciting options to choose from every time you visit.
Most local cuisines offer a variety of simple vegan options which will be easy to identify.
Doubles is a very popular local East Indian delicacy here in Trinidad & Tobago that is vegan. Although not intentionally vegan, when you taste it, you're going to be so happy that it is vegan. Doubles is a sandwich made with two bara (flat fried bread) filled with channa (curried chick peas). If ever in Trinidad & Tobago you definitely need to try this delicious street food.
Saheena is another popular local East Indian delicacy that tastes delicious. The two main ingredients to make saheena are dasheen plant and split peas powder. This street food is usually sold from the same vender you'll get your doubles from.
Fresh Fruits & Vegetables
In Trinidad & Tobago you can always find fresh fruits and vegetables in the countless number of local markets. There are so many delicious home cooked meals you can make with fresh produce from the island.
Chinese restaurants are very popular here in Trinidad & Tobago making it easily accessible when your in the mood to order takeout. Vegans have delicious varieties of rice, vegetables, mushrooms and tofu. When ordering your fried rice be sure to specify no eggs.
Although this is a popular local fried chicken restaurant chain, there is 1 option for vegans on their menu and it's the bean burger combo which includes the bean burger together with fries and a drink.
Burger Food Carts
At local events and also during the evening into night period you will almost always find people selling burgers in the towns and most of them offer soy burgers. There are a couple things to note before ordering though. Ensure there is a dedicated grill/section for cooking the soy burger, that they use separate utensils and tell them no white sauce.
